Mythology Of Mesopotamian

The myths of Mesopotamia are wonderful, they tell of kings, gods, goddesses . One of the most popular ones: Gilgamesh. Please look in your library and find the tale Gilgamesh because it's such a long and fascinating myth about a king whom the called Gilgamesh. Since Gilgamesh is such a long myth, and would be very hard to follow on one page! We will tell you about Etana (one of my other favorite myths) instead.

ETANA

Etana had been declared king, But sadly had no heir! After time he offers many prayers and sacrifices to the sun god, Shamash, who one day tells Etana to go over the mountain and find an eagle imprisoned in a pit. The eagle had made an oath of friendship with the serpent who lived at the base of the tree where the eagle had made his nest. One day the eagle was so very hungry and could not find any food. When he was flying high in search of food he came across the serpent's young. Not realizing that they were the serpent's, the eagle swooped down and devoured the young.

The serpent appealed to Shamash for justice, when Shamash heard this he taught the serpent how to catch the eagle and imprison him in a pit. And the serpent did so. After a long hard journey over the mountain to reach the pit Etana heard some weeping. It was coming from the pit! When Etana asked why the eagle was crying the eagle explained the real story. He told him about how very hungry he was, and how he didn't know that they were the serpents young. When Etana heard this instead of killing the eagle, he saved him! The eagle was so happy, that he flew Etana up to the heavens! There Ishtar bestows upon Etana the plant of birth.
