Law Of Mesopotamia Cultures

The Code of Hammurabi is one of the most ancient written law known to men. Hammurabi, the king, reigned from 1792 to 1750 BC. He was one of the first rulers who organized the administration of justice in a written law. This law, known as the Code of Hammurabi, consisted of 282 provisions in categories such as family, labor, trade, etc. This is the first form of a written legal system, which has a lot of parallelism with the American justice system.

It is one of the greated achievements made by Mesopotamian. It offered a model form of law case in one country. It told people law was made by god and people have to follow it. And it told people law is right and the people have to obey what rules they had.

Of course, you cam see there is some effect made by religion. The Code of Hammurabi emphasizes that law is sacred and inviolable. But The Code of Hammurabi will give different extent punishment to crimal accordding to one's level in the country.

On other words, people will get different punishment accordding to their own levels in the country. People could be classified two most basic levels in the code: nationals ( Babylonia, man ) and slaves.

See the example:

196. If a man put out the eye of another man, his eye shall be put out.

199. If he put out the eye of a man's slave, or break the bone of a man's slave, he shall pay one-half of its value.
