Assyrian Empire Period ( 1960-609 B.C )

While the Babylonian Empire was situated in southern Mesopotamia, the Assyrian Empire was centered on the northern Euphrates. The Assyrians inherited the culture of the Sumerians and the Akkadians, and adopted the Akkadian cuneiform writing system as the Babylonians had.

Assyrian history is divided into the Old Assyrian Empire ( 1,960-1,400 B.C. ), Middle Assyrian Empire( 1,400-800 B.C ),and New Assyrian Empire( 884-612 B.C ). In the Middle and New Assyrian Empire,Assyrian was very powerful. Assyrain's influence eventually reached Egypt, marking the the Assyrain Empire bigger than ever. Then, in 612 B.C.,the Medes allied with the Chaldaeans, destroying Nineveh.

New Babylon ( 626-539 B.C )

[ Discovery of New Babylon ]

The New Babylon Empire was founded by the Chaldaeans. In 626 B.C., they drove the Assyrain out of Babylon and created the Chaldaeans Empire or New Babylon Empire.

[ Nebuchadnezzar II ] ( 605-562 B.C )

Nebuchadnezzar II was the greatest ruler of the New Babylonian Empire. In 586B.C., he succeeded in capturing Jerusalem and destroyed the Hebrew kingdom of Judah. He relocated the people living in Judah to Babylon, making them slaves. In Hebrew history ,this period is known as the Babylon Captivity. Nebuchadnezzar II continuously engaged in warfare, and in the meantime he rebuilt Babylon. Babylon, measuring 850 hectares, was the biggest city in the empire of Nebuchadnezzar.

Ending…

Under the rule of Persia, Babylon enjoyed tremendous prosperity and became the capital of Babylonia; but in 482 B.C, the Babylonian rose against the Persians, and Babylon, with the intention of marking Babylon the capital of his empire. He restored many ruined temples, and died in Nebuchadnezzar's palace in Babylon in 323 B.C.

After the death of Alexander the Great ,the Seleucids ( 312-64 B.C ) ruled Mesopotamia and Babylon. Antiochus I ( 280-261 B.C ) set up his new capital, Seleucia ,near the Tigris. With its Greek-style architecture, Seleucia replaced Babylon as the most important city in Mesopotamia in the later years of Seleucus' reign. Persian and Greek cultures became dominant in Mesopotamia, and Mesopotamia culture declined, this time for good.

Think & Quest

  • Did Mesopotamia really disappear from our world? Whay do you think?
  • What have the the people in Greek done for saving the Mesopotamia culture?
( Please search reference by yourself )
    Why did they do it?
  • When a culture began blending with other cultures...Do you think it is good? Why?
  • How and why can one culture blend with other cultures? Could you make any examples?
