Idea: Find out what training firefighters have to go through (research on the Internet), and then tone down the amount of work, but allow the kids to try some of the things that the firefighters must be able to do just to get accepted. For example, the basic physical requirements for becoming a smokejumper are (past being a firefighter) doing a test that includes doing 7 pullups, 25 pushups, and 45 situps.
