Idea: The 1995 Federal Fire Policy created the following priorities for fighting fires:
1. Protect the lives of fire fighters, and the public
2. Protect communities,
3. Protect homes and other structures, and
4. Protect critical natural resources (i.e. forests).
In normal fire years, this priority system was never a problem for firefighters, but it wasn't so in 2000. Before, they could usually meet all of those priorities, but in 2000, it was usually just protecting lives and structures. This put a large emphasis on protecting homes in the urban interface over fighting forest fires. Write a 1 page minimum essay answering the following questions: Does this make sense? Should these homeowners take greater responsibility in protecting their homes? How do the people in the interviews feel who live in these areas?
