2000 Fire Season
English > Historical Fires > 2000 Fire Season

The 2000 wildfire season was, in many ways, unparalleled by any other wildfire season. 2000 was the most costly wildfire season ever-the United States Federal Government spent a record $1.6 billion fighting wildfires in 2000. The 2000 season also received unprecedented media coverage- many of the fires received international attention, and people from around the world heard about the fires of 2000.

Though not a record year in size, the 2000 wildfire season stretched firefighting resources to the max. Firefighters from the United States were augmented by both military personnel and international firefighters from Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand. In addition to personnel, 1,200 fire engines, 240 helicopters, and 50 airtankers were used in fighting the wildfires of 2000.

As communities that were destroyed by the 2000 wildfires are rebuilt, foresters and scientists are analyzing what happened in 2000, why the wildfires did what they did, and how we can prevent another season like 2000. The following pages tell what is known about why the 2000 wildfires were so severe, how they were fought, and how they affected everything from government policy to small towns and communities.
