Smokejumpers are often the first firefighters to a fire, and sometimes are the only ones in remote situations. They often end up in more rugged terrain, which is more challenging than being a normal firefighter. Smokejumpers have to be specially trained and conditioned for the job that, at times, can be more dangerous than regular firefighting.
