Oprah winfrey is a phenomenon. This actress, producer, book promoter, philanthropist, businesswoman and talk show host is the chairman of HARPO Entertainment group. She joins the elite company of Lucille Ball and Mary Pickford, as one of only three women in TV and Film to own their own production studios. Based in Chicago.
She has had a profound influence on millions of people during the latter half of the 20th century, and her influence looks set to continue well into the 21st century. Future winners takes a closer look at this remarkable woman who has the capacity to influence and change lives.
You don't become the world's highest paid entertainer being born with a silver spoon in your mouth.
Oprah started her life with a misspelled name (her name was supposed to be ORPAH), never had any money and was sexually molested by several of her male relatives including her dad. To make matters worse, she had an out of wedlock Baby at the age of 14 (the baby died shortly afterwards). And once experimented with cocaine. Not an auspicious beginning for a woman whose name was to become synonymous with F&F (fame and fortune), and lots of it. But then, oprah has always known she was "born to be greatness".
Today oprah is the undisputed queen of entertainment, whose unshakable courage and influence is felt all over the world. She has already left an indelible mark on the face of television. From her humble beginnings in rural Mississippi, oprah's legacy has established her as one of the most important figures in popular culture.
Her contribution can be felt in beyond the world of television and into areas such as publishing, music, film, education, health, and fitness. An educator who in September 1999 joined Stedman Graham as an adjunct professor at the J.L Kellogg Graduate school of management Northwestern university to co-teach "Dynamics Of Leadership." The course curriculum developed by professors, winfrey and Graham shares insight into how students can cultivate their own Leadership skills and develop an approach to management, Leadership and Organizational issues suited to their individual circumstances. "Dynamic Of Leadership" was offered at Kellogg again in the fall of 2000. If oprah plugs a book on her show, it jumps to number one in the bestseller list. If she raves about her latest diet or exercise regimen, thousands of women immediately try it out. But she is not only famous for her talk show.
She has been nominated for the best supporting actress Oscar for her moving performance in Steven Spielberg's " the color purple", and recently produced and starred in the movie adaptation of Toni Morrison's Pulitzer prize winning novel "Beloved" she has been honored with the prestigious awards in broadcasting, she was also named one of the most 100 influential people of the 20th century and has also received seven outstanding Emmy awards for great personality and Nine Emmy awards for television. The multi-millionaires entertainer is also a philanthropist, sharing her good fortune with several charities, especially educational institutions and children's causes. So popular is oprah that America's maverick reform party wants her to stand for vice-president.
She has already said ("I am flattered but have no intention of running for public office,") were her exact words but her fans find the thought tempting. A candidate with a proven track records of being honest, with genuine empathy for people, who can change things simply by speaking about them seems perfect (white house material). Plus she is black, and a woman both of which is long overdue. Change your mind, oprah- your country needs you!
