Teotihuacan - Part 3
Millon's
project also found many crosses pecked into floor pavements and rocks
throughout Teotihuacan.
To the left
is a photo by Clive Ruggles of such a cross group, with the pattern highlighted
by us in green.
These pecked
crosses consist of 2 concentric circles divided nicely into 4 by 2 dotted
axes. One of these, TEO1of Viking Group cross made up of 233 holes and
3 feet in diameter, has a design and size very similar to one found on
western Cerro Colorado, 3km away. Both are divided into 4 by 2 dotted
axes with 10 dots within the inner circle, 4 between the smaller and larger
circle and 4 beyond the larger circle.
Archaeologist
Dr James W.Dow linked the 2 by their visual similarity, and their location
on the same line that is almost exactly perpendicular to the Street of
the Death. Dr Dow proposed that they were used as surveyors' benchmarks
during the construction of Teotihuacan. Tim Laughton of the University
College London, though, has a different idea. If the line perpendicular
to the main axis is extended from the Pyramid of the Sun to the western
horizon it reaches Cerro Colorado where the sun sets on the 12th August
and 29th April. These two dates fall 260 and 105 days apart, numbers relating
to the 260 day and 365 day calendar. Laughton argues that the Pyramid
was aligned to define the 2 numbers. See the clearer
diagram here.
You can read
a paper by Laughton here.
As a last
note, it is an extraordinary coincidence that the particle "Teo"
also means "God" in Latin.
