Tenochtitlan

The center of the Aztec empire was at Tenochtitlan. Today Tenochtitlan lies beneath Mexico City. At Tenochtitlan's center is the Great Temple aka Templo Mayor, the physical and metaphysical centre of their world, peaked with shrines to Tlalc, god of rain, and to Huitzilopochtli, god of war.

Located near the Tropic of Cancer, it was one of the biggest cities in the world when the Spaniards arrived. Home to between 200,000 and 300,000 people, the Spaniards were awestruck at the order and magnificence of the city, with its systematic grid layout, developed drainage systems and asthetically balanced construction.

Standing on the west side of the Great Temple on the equinox, one would have been able to see the sun move from the space between the 2 temples on the top and eventually rise over the temple Huitzilopochtli. Anthony Aveni found The Temple was skewed nearly 7.5 degrees south of true east to match the sun's path.
