Ask The Archaeologist : The Pyramid Debates

When in doubt, conflict arises. Exciting conflict. Indeed, there are many theories as to the function, the who, what, why ,where, when and how of the Great Pyramids. Before starting on this section you should first read the section on The Great Pyramids. Do check out the Book Review Section as well. Built by giants, extraterrestrials, for acoustical amplification, navigation...hypothesizing abounds. Another one of the theories proposed is the alignment of the pyramids to Orion, as you might like to compare them below:

Take note, however, that physically the pyramids would have to be inverted for this alignment to match from a ground to sky view. The debate rages on.

"The evidence that orthodox scholars ignore and misrepresent has mounted up over the years and stands quietly in the shadows, refusing to go away. " -Graham Hancock

"Of course it is not possible for one reason. Until now there is no evidence at all that has been found in any place, not only at Giza, but also in Egypt. People have been excavating in Egypt for the last 200 years. No single artifact, no single inscription, or pottery, or anything has been found until now, in any place to predate the Egyptian civilization more than 5,000 years ago."

-ZAHI HAWASS, Director General of Giza in a PBS NOVA Interview when asked whether claims that a great civilization predating ancient dynastic Egypt - one that existed some 10,500 years B.C. - could have been responsible for building the pyramids and sculpting the Sphinx.

We got to business and wrote to Paul Haanen, a scholar in the history, prehistory and archaeology of ancient Egypt up to the Old Kingdom; early state formation and computer applications in archaeology.
