Water clocks:
The Greeks invented this and called it a clepsydra, which it literally means "water thief". It is used to time the speeches of lawyers by a hole in a bowl of water and its sinking speed showed the time spent. Later on, gears, models of planets and moon orbiting were added.
Is this good enough?
Water has to be added constantly and attention must be paid attentively and closely. Each has its only speed and was inappropriate for winter use.
