Table manners
Chinese food are served in a "group style" - that is many different plates are put on the table - mostly on lazy susans and are shared by everyone. There are always a lot of choices - always more than needed. One has to be very polite during meals. The host usually use chopsticks to put food into the guests' bowls. If one is happy with the food, one must praise it by saying it out. If not, one can just say thank you and it is understood.
Don'ts:
One should never put one's pair of chopsticks upright on the bowl of rice or whatever it is in the bowl. This is because in temples and shrines, all Chinese send their best of luck to the dead by offering incenses that look like ***** in front of their grave. If one puts their chopsticks in the wrong place, one will be considered to be very rude and not respectful.
The spout of the teapot should not face anyone. It should be put in the direction where no one else sits to avoid being impolite.
Tapping on the bowl with one's chopsticks also shows a sign of impoliteness. They reckoned that beggars tap on their bowls for money and if one do it at home, it is a sign of omen. People also do so when food are served too slowly in restaurants, however, doing it at home would be like slurring the cook.
If one wanted to eat fish, one must eat the side which is facing up. If the top part is all eaten up, one should never flip the fish over. Instead, it is better to get the bones out and eat the bottom part. This dates back to the main occupation of men in the olden days - fishermen. Fish always represent the ships and if the fish are flipped, it means that the ships will also encounter the same situation. In order to "save" the lives of their families and relatives, they think that it is better to eat fish in a special way.
Last but not least, it is not recommended to get the plate of food that is far away even if on wants it. This marks another example of discourteousness. Most are limited to eat those that are close around.
Yes, people are quite superstitious.
