Lantern Festival
Chinese Lunar Calendar - 15 January
Chinese people have a specific name for this - Yuan Xiao Jie. Since the Han Dynasty (206BC 221AD), people would gather with their lanterns for a "parade". One special game that children would play is the guessing of riddles that are hanging down from different lanterns. Often, they would get presents if they guessed the right answer. Fireworks, singings and dancings would also be performed. One important "ceremony" that families "have" to do is eating round rice balls which are called "tong yuan" and a kind of dessert with sesame, chinese winter melon and minced red beans "yuan xiao" - something similar to the name of the festival. "yuan" in Chinese can mean unity and togetherness that parallels to this festival for family gathering.
