Hour glass:

The appearance should be familiar to most of us since the "waiting icon" cursor in the computer is just what is actually is.  With wood stabilizing the two levels of the glass and a narrow middle, it sealed both sides.  The speed of the running sand inside helped timing.  This is an assistance to timing speeches, sermons, watching duties and cooking.

Is this good enough?

this may not be totally accurate as the narrow middle may be blocked and slow down the timing process.  Placing it on a rough surface (that will make the thing slanted) also affects the result.
