Chinese New Year

Chinese Lunar Calendar - 1 January

This the most important festival of all.  It can be called the "Spring Festival", "Chun Jie" or "Kuo Nien".  It is different from the Western one since it is in February.  A few days before, people would put two long pieces of paper called "Fei Chun" outside the two pillars of their doors, hang an upside down word "luck" or "Fu" in Chinese as a sign of luck.  In addition, they would clean their houses and prevent themselves to say foul languages for a couple of days.  When the night came, the whole family, here I really mean whole, even the ones overseas, will sit together in one place, chat and eat for the whole evening.  The next few days, it is required for the married to give out red pockets with lucky money inside to the non married.  People would also go to their relatives' houses, paying respect, asking about the conditions of each other and each their best of luck.  These "errands" will carry on for about 5 days and is a must.  For the whole period of Chinese New Year, pictures of lion and tigers - meaning health and power; dragons - meaning best of everything; fish - meaning surplus in wealth would be hung everywhere in the house.  A special kind of bread "Sho bao" is inevitable for everyone.  Its name literally means longetivity and everything is done mostly for the name of it.  Temples and shrines would be opened for people to pray for whatever they wish.  Good health, wealth and having obedient children are always the first choices.  It is the busiest festival of all.
