Environmental Risks

Many people believed that we should be extra careful when dealing with genetically modified organisms. This is because DNA is actually not well understood. The concerns above arise from an appreciation of the fundamental role DNA plays in life, the gaps in our understanding of it, and the vast scale of application of the little we do know.

We may damage the ecology when we release a genetically modified species into the environment. The species may reproduce so quickly that they are able to compete successfully with their wild relatives. This may upset the balance of the ecosystem. We would have no idea of the damage the species may have on the environment until a drastic effect is seen. Moreover, there is the concern of genetically modified bacteria grow out of our control.  It may become impossible to contain. Unlike chemical or nuclear contamination, negative effects are irreversible.
