The Persistence of Memory

At first sight, we don't think of The Persistence of Memory as a portrait of any kind, but it does have many portrait-like elements. At first glance, we can idenitify the melting watches, and the recognizable aspects of the background, but when you look closer, you see that the central figure is, indeed, a dissorted face. It gives a new definition to the term "portrait." The growing popularity of abstract art seeks to redefine the traditional forms of portraiture. The image Dalì has painted is so vivid in color and dimension, almost resembling that of a computer rendered artwork of today. The limp clock, symbolizing that time is vague in our memories, seek to create a strong image in our minds. The memoreies are of people in the past, those without a remembered face, erased by time, but recreated in our minds. And as disorted as those faces are, they stay with you, persistent in our minds. And, thus, the creation of a new type of portrait, is one defined not bu the traditional portrait rubric, but by imagination. It seeks to cassy strength in its message, that the "persistence of memory" stands timeless in our minds.
