WORD POWER |
| INTRODUCTION | The Point of Word Power Why is there a need to go to the trouble of learning new words? There are a few reasons to this. Knowing the formation of words and having a good knowledge of them helps us to handle ideas. It is not impossible to think using visual images but it takes time. Being skilled in the precise use of words also helps to improve our thinking. A larger vocabulary also helps us express ourselves better. We will also be treated with more respect. Words are fun. Facts about them can be amusing too. Chintz and biopsy are the two longest English words spelt in alphabetical order while the vowels in abstemious and facetious are in the correct sequence. Buzz words are better left out as they make us appear more superior in a specialist subject although they are actually clichés. Parameters, cognitive and coordinates are often used to impress others but they will only confuse those who are knowledgeable. |
