| Play this
"What If" game with your family or with a class. It
will help children recognize dangerous situations. It is also a good
time to discuss family rules and reinforce good decision making. To
play the game, simply ask these questions and discuss the answers.
WHAT IF:
- You were home alone and the
doorbell rang?
- You were home alone and the
phone rang? What would you say if someone asked you if your mom was
home?
- You got dropped off for ball
practice (music lesson, dance lesson, etc) and your ride drove
away? You tried to get into the building, but no one was there because
it was the wrong day?
- You were waking home from school
and a car kept following you along the street?
- You were playing alone and a
stranger tried to get you to get in the car with him or her?
- The baby-sitter did something
that is against the family rules?
- You were at a big store
with your family and you got lost? You couldn't find your
parents and you started to feel scared?
- Someone that your family knows
really well wanted you to do something that you didn't feel was
right?
- You were asleep and woke up
suddenly because you smelled smoke?
These are only a few of the
endless "What-If" questions. Play this game often and
think of different situations. Switch the roles and have the
students try to think of other questions.
