Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign that focuses on reducing the demand for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. It started in 1985 when law enforcemnet officer Enrique Camarena was murdered while attempting to stop drug smuggling. The week calls upon all citizens to become aware of the drug problems in their communities and to show their support and commitment by wearing a Red Ribbon. There are several points stressed throughout the week. These include encouraging children to get involved in positive youth activities and being a good role model. All ages participate in Red Ribbon Week. At the elementary level, high-schoolers help pin ribbons to each student. At the middle schools, there are various activities throughout the week such as assemblies, red clothes day, or building improvement projects. For high school, CARE seniors get to help 4th graders plant a Red Ribbon garden. The garden serves as a constant reminder to students as well as the community that it is important to remain drug free. Red Ribbon Week is a positive activity because it brings the entire community together and helps reduce the demand for illegal drugs.
