Lighting

Lights and darks are also consequential when taking a picture. You do not want a flat picture consists of mostly gray. Ansel Adams became famous for his photography because he knew how to bring the tonality out in his photographs. Before you push the button to take every picture, you should consider which objects will be the darkest and the lightest. Look for contrast.

Why do I need to look at the darks and lights before taking my picture?

The direction of light on the post draws viewer's attention to that area of the picture. This is called the focal point. There are many ways to improve the lighting in your picture. A flash can be used in locations where light is normally not available. A reflector can be used to direct soft light onto the subject.

Tip: refrain from taking pictures indoors with yellow lamps as the only source of light. The picture will turn out flat and grainy.
