Q: What is a balanced diet?
Ans: A balanced diet consists of the right amount of carbohydrates, fats, roughage, vitamins, minerals, proteins and water a person needs. Every individual has different needs and thus a balanced diet for you might not be a balanced diet for your mother or children. There reason why there are different needs are due to factors like climate, age, body size, gender and level of activity. All these factors affect the basal metabolism of a person.
Basal metabolism means the minimal amount of nutrients the body needs at complete rest. Since we still breathe and our heart still beats when we are sleeping, all these requires energy and such energy comes from the food that we eat.
