Practice Project: Dimensions of the Orbiter Vehicle

In this practice you will need these CAD commands:
Copy  Move
Line  Arc (Sp, Ep, Mid)
Rectangle Poly Line
Mirror X Delete
 Mirror Y   Scale
Circle Rotate
Dimensions

Here you will dimension the orthographic projections of the Space Shuttle from Lesson 10. Dimensioning was covered in Lesson 8. The correct dimensions for the Orbiter are as follows:

Height: 56
Length: 122
Width: 78

Here are some suggestions for drawing to an accurate size when a paper copy is your basis. First, go to the NASA site (see link below) and print out a copy of the original drawing.  Then you can superimpose a grid on it. This will help you draw proportionately.

Next, you have two options.  The first is to draw the views the actual dimensions. This is the preferred approach in CAD. Draw everything full scale, then apply a scale factor for plotting. Another approach is to draw the views scaled down to a standard sheet size, say a length of 12.2, width of 7.8, height of 5.6. Then use the Scale command to scale up to the correct dimensions.
