Lesson 8. Dimensioning - Mercury Redstone Booster Units

The Mercury Redstone rocket was originally designed to carry a nuclear warhead. It was used for the first few ballistic Mercury missions. (Ballistic refers to those missions where the capsule entered space, then returned immediately to Earth without orbiting.) The Redstone used a liquid oxygen and ethyl alcohol fuel combination for propulsion. Its body was 59' long and 70", or about 6', in diameter. To learn more about the Mercury Program, click here:

Prior to this lesson, the drawings you have been doing have been sized by eye. That is, no particular scale or dimensions were given. In this project though, you will be dimensioning the rocket, so you need to draw it accurately.

Since this is a very detailed drawing, you may find it helpful to print out a hard copy of the finished CadStd drawing.

Click here to download it. You can then open it in CadStd and print it out.

The simplified version of the NASA drawing used in this lesson is shown below. Take a moment to visualize the steps involved with this drawing.
