Welcome

Welcome to Gates of Creation, a comprehensive site with up to date information on the many aspects of today's computer hardware. This site has been designed to fit the needs of as many age groups as possible. For beginner computer users, as well as novice users and even Computer Hardware teachers. We have also broken down the computer hardware parts into five basic sections. They are:

  • Basic Hardware
  • Processors
  • Storage
  • Memory
  • Displays

There is also a teacher section on this site, which contains lessons as well as tests for teachers to use (some teachers have already successfully used our content and tests). The Miscellaneous section of the site includes a special Flash History Timeline designed especially for the Gates of Creation Site.

Site Customization and Interactivity

This site was made so that many aspects of it can be customized. For example, you can choose one of the five color schemes we have made for you, languages, or if you want Flash enabled or disabled while viewing the information. This is just one of the features you can customize in the Options page of this site (a link is provided on the top right of the site).

There are also countless ways to interact all over the site. Many of the pages with the information of the different aspects of hardware have interactive Flash presentations. We also have missions that you can play in every section of the site. The missions will gain you points, and you can even see your ranking compared to others on our rankings page in the Miscellaneous section. Adding computer hardware terms in our glossary will also gain you points. Note that you have to sign up and log in to our site in order to play the missions or submit computer terms.

In almost every section of the website there is a comment system at the bottom of the page where users can shortly discuss the topics they are reading about. There is also a message board in case you want to discuss or ask our other users any hardware questions. If you need an answer quickly or want to discuss hardware in real-time, we also have an ICQ Active-Server set up for people like you. Please look in the menu and click the ICQ Active List button to automaically add us to your ICQ active list.

Just to remind you, please participate in the interactive poll that is located in the menu.

Basic Hardware

Before you learn about the main parts of a computer, it is very important to have a very good understanding of the basics. With a good foundation, you will learn and understand the more complex parts of Computer Hardware at a much quicker pace. Basic Hardware includes the binary number system, as well as computer logic gates (which are the most basic parts of a computer, the site name derives from it). By reading and understanding everything included in this section, you will be on your way to being a computer hardware expert.

Processors

A very important part of a computer, the Processor is often thought of as the computer equivalent of a brain. The processor is getting increasingly more complex, in order to add new features that will speed it up. In this section, we will be taking a look at the basic parts of a processor, and what they do. We will also be looking at the considerably short history of Processors, as well as some of the myths that people have about how the computer speed is directly related to the "MHz" speed of the Processor.

Storage

Another computer component often thought of as the brains of the computer. Storage in computers store all of the information that we input, as well as the data that is calculated by the computer for the user. We will be taking a look at today's standards in computer storage, which includes:

  • Hard Drives
  • CD-ROM Drives
  • DVD-ROM Drives
  • Floppy Disk Drives

Memory

Although memory is very commonly mistaken for storage, it is much different. Memory is used to temporarily store the data that the user will be using the most. Much faster than permanent storage, it allows the computer to reach greater speeds, and work much more efficiently. Unlike permanent storage such as a Hard Drive, the data in the memory is lost when the computer is turned off.

Displays

We all know what displays are. In fact, you are looking at one right now. Displays are used by the computer to output information to the user in a visual manner. There are various types of monitors, as well as various ways that that the computer outputs the data to the monitor. In this section, you will learn more about display adapters, as well as computer monitors.

Enjoy the site and have FUN!
