For centuries people have watched birds and dreamed of a day they could fly. That dream was fulfilled. Then, they gazed into space and imagined going beyond the atmosphere of Earth. That dream also became a reality when Yury Gagarin blasted off and became the first man in space. Just eight years later, two astronauts stepped out of the lunar module and onto the barren surface of the moon.
Some people say, “the sky is the limit.” Do not listen to them. The limit is as far and deep as human curiosity. As long as humans continue to be open-minded and dream of greater things, we will continue to grow, develop, and expand. There may even be a day in which science fiction scenarios like Star Trek become a reality.
The Universe has an unimaginable vastness. With over 200 billion stars in our galaxy and 100 billion galaxies, the Universe has an estimated total of 10 trillion billion stars. Using the swiftest ship of today (25,000 mph) trip to Proxima Centauri, the nearest star, would take 114,000 years [slightly beyond our lifetime]. Proxima Centauri is only 4.2 light-years away! How about the stars that are hundreds, thousands, or even millions of light-years away?
