THE GROUP OF THE METHADONELong time ago scientists tried to make the structure of the molecule of morphine simpler, which can be synthesized more easily. One of the most popuar analgetics is methadone, which was found in Germany by the time of World War II. Herman Georing, a drug addict, was the "inspirer" of the research for new synthetic opiates. He was afraid that he soon would not be able to find any morphine, because it wasn't prepared in Germany. The German chemists invented methadone, which was not only stronger than morphine, but also had a much longer effect. Nowadays methadone is still used as an analgetic, but it is mostly famous as a medicine for treatment of narcotic users. The reason, for it to be chosen, is its stronger effect that continues longer in time than heroin, for example. Also, when it's taken by mouth, it causes no euphoria and sleepiness; the users of methadone can later easily get back to what they were doing before using the drug. Some believe that after taking methadone, it is impossible to feel euphoria the next time you take heroin. This, to a certain extent, prevents the users from taking the next dose. But the drug-addicts always find ways (by taking other drugs with it, etc.) to feel the "high". Methadone has also many disadvantages. It may result in gaining weight, constipation, thirst, and hallucinations. According to some users it has even worse effect over sexuality than heroin. Methadone also causes addiction, as the other drugs do. That's why many people don't accept this therapy, but there is still nothing better that this. |
