SEMI-SYNTHETIC OPIATES AND OPIATE ANTAGONISTSFirst, we must mention codeine (metylmorphine), which is a weaker analgetic than morphine, but very well fights back cough. Codeine in fact is a natural alkaloid of opium, but its amount is very little in the poppy. Thus the main part of the legally prepared morphine is converted into codeine. Most often drug addicts use codeine, because they cannot find anything stronger. It can't be injected into the veins, because it causes inflammation of the veins. Another derivative of morphine is ethylmorphine (dionine). It is more effective than codeine, but less effective than morphine. It is used as an analgetic and against cough. Another synthetic substance, prepared from morphine is apomorphine. Morphine and apomorphine are only similar in names. Apomorphine is no opiate; it causes strong vomiting, which can be used for treatment of poisons or opiate addiction. Sometimes apomorphine is also used to cause a reflex of disgust against alcohol.
