The Bulgarian Commune

Successful treatment

In the commune, the ex-drug-addicts start their life all over again, forgetting everything that was before. It's the small things that matter to them the most - the installed electricity, the water-heater, etc. The most important is that they feel satisfied with the conditions, which is proved by the letters they sent to their relatives. The commune attendants state that isolation and hard labor are the only way of prevention from drugs. The medicinal treatment is not enough. Boian, one of the commune attendants, says: "I have tried 20 different treatments, all of them very expensive, in different therapeutic facilities, but I couldn't give up drugs. By the way, all of my acquaintances, who have succeeded in giving up drugs, including girls, did not do it with the help of medicines. It was total isolation that mattered the most". It has been proved that the chance of overcoming of the addiction, while living in the commune, is much higher than the one when the person stays for example in a clinic or a hospital. Over 90% of those, who have been commune attendants, have given up heroin forever. There is only one commune in Bulgaria. And as the tradition goes, money is the biggest problem. There is a lack of funds for the establishment of better conditions for the already existing commune, as well as for others to be built up. Think of those, who want to cure themselves from this "disease", for which the society itself is mainly the one to blame. Let's help them, otherwise the only thing that the future holds for them is inevitable death. Let's help them, because the same may happen to our children or friends!

This is a letter by a communard addressed to his parents.

Sashko Alexandrov

Hello, suns of life!

You know who I am taking about, don’t you? I think you know that just like mother Earth can’t live without sunlight, I can’t live without sun either. And you two are my suns. I hope that you are all right.

And now something about me and life, here in the commune. Everything is fine here, I get along with the rest of the boys here, I help them whenever I can. We have already 4 new boys in the commune, two of them are in my room. There is nothing new here in the commune, we work from dawn till dusk. At the moment we are gathering wood, we carry hay and we work on the rabbit-farm. In the spare time the rest of the boys teach me how to read and write, it’s a little bit hard but for a year and three months I will learn.

Send my regards to all the relatives and tell them that Sashko is not an addict any more.

I send all my thanks to you two, who supported me and encouraged me in this initiative of mine.

Mother, thank you very much for the things you’ve sent me and the boys are also very grateful.

Mother, please send me some winter clothes, ask aunt Rosi, she will tell you what kind of. Boxer shorts – 4, t-shirts – 4, socks – 5 pairs, some fruits, some marmalade, 3 banitzas, a pair of shoes to play football, some shampoo, one deodorant, a box of washing powder and I would be grateful if you can find a camera. And something to aromatize the room.

That’s all for now.

I love you!

Your son,

Sashko

P.S. You can tell all my ex-friends that they are full a s**t.
