Effect and toxicity

It is not always possible to differentiate the separate stages. The first phase, usually accompanied by inconsiderable physical sensations, actually represents a kind of withdrawal from the daily troubles and the occurrence of a whole new “inner life”, which is sometimes very scary for the user himself. In the second phase there may be some perceptional hallucinations, miracles, that affect the individual with such a force and persuasiveness, that he of ten thinks they are part of reality. During most of the time there are also some changes in the spiritual life, whose brightest characteristic is the so-called “inner happiness” or something like that. People usually can’t express it in words, something out of this world but yet something very pleasant. There are no unpleasant sensations that can disturb these hours of trance-like state.

The illusions are an interesting part of this state. The regular, simple things look miraculous. In comparison to the “material world”, which now appears, the ordinary world of the everyday life looks pale and rather “dead”. The perceptions turn into a colorful symphony. The various colors flash gently, in a way that no man can create by himself. These objects, gleaming in those wonderful colors, move and change their nuances so fast that the mind cannot keep track of them. After a certain period of time arabesques and other shapes also occur. These objects are blackened by dark shades or lightened by shining diamonds. The so-created forms are enchanting in their variety. There are all kinds of geometrical shapes - spheres and cubes, which change their colors very fast; triangles with yellow dots, from which come out golden and silver strings; shining carpets; square pictures made by golden embroidery; stars, that shine in blue, yellow and green; reflections that look like magical crystals; trees in light yellow colors and so on and so on.

The inner fantastic visions may be accompanied also by auditory hallucinations. They occur rarer than the visions. Ringing and other sounds can be heard as if coming from a very long distance and the users often think it’s a choir singing. According to them they are very gentle and pleasant. Sometimes there may also be some pleasant smells, often referred to as a breath of fresh wind; or there may be extraordinary gustatory sensations. Usually the main perceptional system is affected and then the person thinks that he is weightless or that he has become bigger in size; he may even forget who he is. For example the body of an elliptic once became so insensible that the person couldn’t tell whether is he lying or not, where he is lying and how. The sense for time is almost lost.

It is important to underline the fact during these abnormal perceptions the individual is in total control of his consciousness and the concentration required during thinking is not changed at all. The user is absolutely aware of his state at the moment. He often wishes to analyze himself, for example he is wondering whether these strange things are real. But he soon trashes this idea, having in mind that he has taken peyote.
