Opiates

Most people relate the words narcotic user to the image of a dirty, hollow-cheeked man with vacant eyes, injecting heroin in his veins, who in his spare time burgles drug-stores or are prostitutes; unlike many other opinions, this image is quite close to reality. People, who use opiates, mostly heroin, are only a very small group of all who use psychoactive substances. The reason for them to attract such a big attention are the special features of their drugs, which very quickly make the users dependent on their power. Opiates rarely kill alone; they just lead to a way of life that quickly finishes with diseases and death. This life-style isn't only created by the properties of the drugs, but also by the attitude of every single society to their use. The history of opiates is full of misunderstandings, prejudices, lies and hopes. That's why it deserves one's attention.
