Nicotine

History and Usage Effects and Toxicity Nicotine-like Substances

Other nicotine-like substances

In Bulgaria it is recommended to smokers, who want to give up smoking, to take tablets called “Tabex”, which contain citicine and in some other countries tablets, containing lobeline, are sold. The idea of this type of therapy is the following one: The smoker, who wants to give up cigarettes, takes regularly the tablets and in this way a certain concentration of citicine or lobeline is built up in his organism. This concentration is low enough and because of this there are no psychological and physiological effects. When a cigarette is smoked, however, the effect of nicotine is added to those of the already present nicotine-like substances, in a way, which leads to the appearance of some unpleasant symptoms – nausea and others similar to it. It is considered that the conditioned reflex is gradually developed in the smoker’s organism and this reflex links the cigarette with the unpleasant experiences.
