Nicotine

History and Usage Effects and Toxicity Nicotine-like Substances

Effects and Toxicity

The effect of nicotine on the nervous system is ambiguous. Almost all researches show that it has a stimulating effect, but it is well known that the smokers perceive the cigarette as a mean, which helps them oppress nervousness and stress.

Tolerance towards nicotine is quickly developed, but it is considered that a real dependency is obtained after 2 or 3 years of habitual smoking. Nicotine brings about extremely strong dependency – about 85% from the people, who have once lit a cigarette, conceive a passion for it.

The nicotine abstinent syndrome is familiar to every smoker, who has not had cigarettes, or has decided one more time to try to give them up, as well as to those, who have been constrained to cohabit with a person in this condition. The main symptoms are: slower pulse, stronger appetite than the usual one and inclination towards gaining weight, disturbance in the sleep and irritability.

The intellectual and physical efficiency of smokers, who are deprived of nicotine, is noticeably reduced. These complaints vanish completely after several months, but sometimes the passionate desire for cigarettes continues years on end.
