EffectsThe first effects after the consumption of LSD are connected with its influence over the peripheral nerve system. They are relevantly weak and often result in widening of the pupils, the pulse is sped up and the blood pressure is increased; there may be also sweating and salivation, sometimes nausea and increasing of the body temperature. In the psychotic sphere the effects of the LSD concern mainly the human perception, the mood, the relationship between nature and the unity of the person. Some say that in large doses LSD can bring to life images from the darkest depths of the subconscious. The most significant are the visuals, which usually begin with echo-images which very fast progress in illusions and then in simple hallucinations – stains, lines, dots and so on. Together with the psychosis progression real hallucinations take place. They are called pseudo-hallucinations because the person is aware of the fact that they are result of the LSD. The objects, the distance, the colors look distorted; usually the colors are brighter but in the depressive phase of the psychosis they look paler. The hallucinations first resemble dots, flashes, waves, bands, stains, circles, spirals, and gradually they evolve to well-shaped objects, animals, humans, and whole pictures. The auditory phenomena usually result in increased sensibility – the low sounds are considered as loud and echoing. The gustatory and olfactory illusions are rare. The tactile illusions and hallucinations occur more often. For example a man used to feel that he has wetted his pants and that his slips are all wet. Some irritations may also cause the reaction of other senses – for example colors can be heard and sounds can be seen and so on. The most significant part of the effects of LSD are the changes of the scheme of the body. The whole body or parts of it look different in shape, size, and location or may be just missing. Sometimes the person thinks that his body is getting bigger and more often that it is getting smaller. Then he thinks his clothes are too big. The sense for time is also changed, an hour may seem like a minute and a minute may seem like an hour. Some changes in the mood are also typical - they usually vary from euphoria to depression, although the first one prevails, because people are usually astounded by the beauty of the hallucinations. The euphoria may be “poured out” like frantic laughter. Those, who are usually being depressed, often get very active and sometimes they may be dangerous for both their companion and themselves. The effects of LSD described in the yellow press are full of stories about people who jump out of their windows, thinking that they can fly. This is not quite possible but there was such a case. Sometimes the way a person feels inside could be described only as depression. In such a state some people have committed suicide. At the peak point of the psychosis there may be some signs of unrest and panic; sometimes the whole experience may be considered as scary. Some feel immense fear, thinking that the psychosis will last forever and that they have become totally insane. Despite the drastic changes concerning the perception and in the mood, great part of the takers is aware of fact that everything that they feel is a result from the effect of the substance. This state of being aware could disappear only if greater doses are being taken in. The unity of the personality is often distorted. This is mainly because of the interference with the scheme of the body. Sometimes schizophrenia-like state may be seen. People often think they have a split personality, but as a whole the psychosis caused by LSD has almost nothing to do with the one caused by schizophrenia. People often underline the fact that LSD increases the pleasure from the satisfactory of art works, which is also the reason for its wide usage among artists. It is important to mention that the effects of LSD very much depend on the environment. The best of them occur usually when sitting in a dark room and being calm. When the user tries to concentrate on one object the effects may decrease in strength. For the experiment to be a pleasant one the users should also be feeling cozy, surrounded by good friends.
