Cannabis

History and usage Products Effects Toxicity Legalization

Effects

The effects of the cannabis differentiate themselves from those of opiates as well as from those of the classical hallucinogens such as LSD, mescaline etc. Cannabis doesn’t cause such strong euphoria as opiates do, nor does it have such an influence over the consciousness as the typical hallucinogens have.

The intoxication begins after a period of unrest of about 10 – 30 minutes after the smoker has smoked his or her cigarette. During this period the user sometimes may develop fear from death and anxiety, caused by an obscure reason. After several minutes he starts to feel more relaxed until he bursts into euphoria. He starts talking nervously, he is satisfied, happily anxious, he laughs loudly and uncontrollably without any particular reason. He thinks that his speech is clever and brilliant. It seems that his thoughts flow freely but certain confusion may occur if he tries to remember what he was thinking about a few minutes ago. There may also be some visual hallucinations – shapeless flashes of light accompanied by bright colors, which form and develop as geometrical figures, forms, human faces or complicated pictures. In two hours time the user already wants to go to sleep. He sleeps without dreaming and after he wakes up he remembers everything from the time of the intoxication.

There are also some other important details that may be added to this description. The effect from the smoking lasts about 2 to 4 hours, and if it is taken in directly through the mouth – 4 to 12 hours. Sometimes the restless beginners may receive some help from their friends; the experienced smokers define it as a “happy anxiety”. The intoxication increases their sensibility towards outer stimulants – the colors look brighter, things that were insignificant before are now full of meaning for them. According to studies, this is not caused by the increased sensibility of the senses, but by the different attitude towards the things in the life of the smoker. The sense for time is also changed – minutes may become hours. Cannabis may lead to strong confusion concerning the short-term memory, which result in the already mentioned disunion of the thoughts and the way they speak – sometimes the person may even forget what he or she wanted to say at the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes he may feel split-minded. This is a state in which he may act as an impartial spectator judging his own situation. While a part of his mind is filled with paranoiac thoughts the other part may “laugh” at such thoughts. The always-present degree of the impartial judging of the experienced helps them deal with the surroundings as adequate as they could be. Some even say that if they have the will they may also be able to get out of this state of psychosis.

Marijuana doesn’t provoke voluptuous desires – it just makes sex different. Many people use it just because of that; to fell a new and more interesting way of their sexual relationship, when this relationship is under the threat of being broken because of boredom.
