Anesthetics of Dissociation
One unexpected product of the research on new kind of
medicaments for relieving pain is the discovery of a new class of anesthetics,
which cause a slight euphoria and which may lead to a not so strong dependency.
But of course there are also some side effects. The main one is that they
may cause a specific psychotic disorder, quite similar to schizophrenia.
It may be characterized with hallucinations and detachment from the rest
of the world, which by the way, has given the name to this group of substances
– anesthetics of dissociation or also known as dissociative anesthetics.
Scientists have been studying those substances with great interest, but
very few of them are used today in the modern medical practice. Because
of their hallucinations-causing feature they are pretty much popular in
the non-medical spheres of our society.
