Thank you to Amanda, Benjamin, Benjamin jnr(9), Jarrad (8),
Michael (7). For allowing us to use their photographs, their
voices and recounting their personal experiences.
When we visted the family they were minding their baby niece,
Alysha and according to the kinship they consider her their
daughter. According to the Aboriginal kinship system Benjamin
considers himself a Ngarrindjeri as his mother considered herself
a Ngarridjeri however his father was part Irish. Amanda considers
herself an Adnyamathanha as her Mother considered herself an
Anyamathanha however her father was Narrindjeri. The children
consider themselves Adnyamathanha as Amanda considers her self
Adnyamathanha. All the children speak both Ngarrindjeri and
Adnyamathanha and they are learning Greek at school. The family
totem is "Coongari" which is the Black Swan. "Aboriginal
people don't own the land, the land owns us and we treat it
with respect because the land is our mother" - Ben and Amanda
