children
were regarded as nephews and nieces. This extended to the
grandparents. "Vapapa" was used for both the grandfather and

"In the old days we educated the kids from when they were babies.
When the mother and father grows them up, they're told all the time,

you've
got to know exactly who they are and where they are so they
can do things right when they come to the (initiation) ground.
They have to know if they're north wind or south wind." (Lynch
Ryan, Port Augusta, 1989 in Education Dept. SA, 1992; 76)
