STRICTLY PROTECTED AREAS (SPA)

Khoh Serkh Mountain (2)

Established: 1977.
Size and location: 65,900 hectares, crest of Altai Mountains, Khovd and Bayanolgii provinces.
Purpose: protection of mountain argali and ibex; snow leopard, Altai snowcock, stone marten are also present.

Khasagt Khairkhan Mountain (4)

Established: 1965.
Size and location: 27,400 hectares, in Altai Mountains, Gobi-Altai province.
Purpose: protection of argali, ibex and the conservation of forest steppe landscape of Mongolian Altai Range.

Otgon Tenger (9)

Established: 1992.
Size and location: 95,500 hectares in central Mongolia, Zavkhan province.
Purpose: conservation of high mountain ecosystem.

NATIONAL PARKS (NP)

Khorgo-White Lake of Terkh (12)

Established: 1994.
Size and location: 73,000 hectares, Arkhangai province.
Purpose: conservation of spectacular mountain scenery and endangered flora and fauna.

NATURAL RESERVES (NR)

Nagalkhan Mountain (15)

Established: 1957.
Size and location: 3,000 hectares, Tov province.
Purpose: protection of southernmost forest steppe.

Batkhan Mountain (16)

Established: 1957.
Size and location: 21,800 hectares, Tov province.
Purpose: conservation of ancient historic and cultural monuments.

Lkhachinvandad Mountain (17)

Established: 1965.
Size and location: 58,800 hectares in southeast of Mongolia, Sukhbaatar province.
Purpose: protection of elk habitat in mountain steppe.

Bulgan River (18)

Established: 1965.
Size and location: 7,700 hectares, Khovd province, near Chinese border.
Purpose: protection of beaver and its habitat.

Khustain Mountain (19)

Established: 1994.
Size and location: 90,000 hectares in Tov province, west of Ulaanbaatar.
Purpose: biodiversity conservation, reintroduction of Takhi (Przewalsk's horse) to the wild;

Ugtam Mountain (20)

Established: 1993.
Size and location: 30,000 hectares in northeastern Mongolia, Dornod province.
Purpose: includes two holy mountains, Ugtam and Khairkhan, and ruins of an important Buddhist monastery.

Sharga and Mankhan (21)

Established: 1994.
Size and location: 316,900 hectares in two parts, one in Khovd, one in Gobi-Altai province.
Purpose: conservation of habitat for Mongolian subspecies of saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica), which is extremely rare.

NATURAL AND HISTORICAL MONUMENTS (NM)

 Bulgan Mountain (22)

Established: 1965.
Size and location: 1,800 hectares, Arkhangai province.
Purpose: conservation of flora, fauna, and scenery of steppe and forest steppe.

Uran-Togoo Tulga Mountain (23)

Established: 1965.
Size and location: 1,600 hectares, Bulgan province.
Purpose: protects landscapes around extinct volcano.

Eej Khairhan Mountain (24)

Established: 1992.
Size and location: 22,500 hectares, Gobi Altai province, just north of Great Gobi SPA.
Purpose: protects spectacular isolated mountain massif, mountain desert landscape, flora, fauna.

Khuisiin Naiman Lake (Eight Lakes of Kbuis) (25)
Established: 1992.
Size and location: 11,500 hectares, Ovorkbangai province, central Mongolia.
Purpose: conservation of lake ecosystems.

Ganga Lake (26)

Established: 1994.
Size and location: 28,800 hectares, Sukhbaatar province.
Purpose: features volcanoes, caves and Gobi lake.
