Software can do many things for a computer. If it weren't for software computers would be nothing more than a blinking box with a few boards inside. Software really allows the computer to come alive.
Software tells the computer how to think. For example, your brain would be nothing without your mind. Your mind is something like software. You can think in your mind, but without a mind you could never think.
Software tells the computer where every part is and it tells every part how to work. It also tells the hardware how to get information from one place to another. For instance if the computer wanted to send your word document from memory to the hard drive the software lets it know how to do this. So as you can see software is very important when it comes to your computer.
