Type: Advanced STOVL/CTOL Strike Fighter
Summary: This fighter will be a multi-role fighter with short take-off and landing capabilities. It will also incorporate vertical lift system, enabling for longer flight due to the fuel saved from short take-offs. The fighter is truly one of the 21st Century and will possibly replace the F/A-18 Hornet and AV-8B Harrier II and even the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
History: The United States Department of Defense wanted a new multi-role, low-cost fighter for the 21st Century. Lockheed Martin and two other companies were competing for rights to make the plane. Lockheed submitted its proposal on June 13, 1996, and in November 1996 received a $718.8 million contract for design, development, construction, and flight testing of two full-scale planes.
