Grassland

Introduction
grassland
grassland [enlarge]
Grasslands are characterized by their tall, perennial grasses and lack of trees. Grazing and roaming animals dominate this tranquil biome. There are two main types of grasslands: tropical grasslands, which include the Pampas and Savanna, and temperate grasslands, which include the prairie, cultivated prairie, and European farmland. Tropical grasslands are located near the equator, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. These areas are hot year-round, usually never dropping under 64° F (18° C). Although these areas are overall very dry, they do have a season of heavy rain. Temperate grasslands are located either north of the Tropic of Cancer or south of the Tropic of Capricorn. These areas experience cold winters and hot summers. Together these grasslands cover more than 14 million square miles (36 million square kilometers), or a quarter of the land on Earth.

Animals such as sheep and hogs tear down our grasslands by uprooting plants, causing erosion
