In recent years, the martial art of Wing Chun (also known as Ving Tsun) has often been portrayed in movies, involving quick, simple movements of the performer's limbs and the fascinating 'playing' of a wooden dummy. Wing Chun Kuen (fist), as a practical, highly effective Southern Kung Fu system, actually involves much more. Tradition teaches that Wing Chun was named after Shaolin Abbess Ng Mui's first student, Yim Wing Chun, after the destruction of the Southern Shaolin Temple. Wing Chun is a blend of both hard and soft techniques, suited for those who are internally-oriented or who might not have an ability or desire to use brute force, yet powerful and simple enough to be used effectively. And since it was created by a woman, it is one of the martial arts that is particularly useful for women.
