@ Sports > Database > Kendo > Ranking

Similar to other Japanese martial arts, Kendo has a grading system with six beginner ranks (kyu) and ten advanced ranks (dan). The student must first advance through the six kyu before testing for the dan ranks, which are named:

Level
Grade Name
1st grade
Shodan
2nd grade
Nidan
3rd grade
Sandan
4th grade
Yodan
5th grade
Godan
6th grade
Rokudan
7th grade
Shichidan
8th grade
Hachidan
9th grade
Kudan
10th grade
Judan

Students are not given colored belts as they advance in rank; the only indicator of their ranking is how they act and perform.

Kendo grades are not presented to students on the basis of their age, sex, race, weight, strength or technique. Instead, factors such as Kendoka's respect, perseverance in practice, and dedication bear more weight.
