To
our knowledge, teleportation devices still haven't been discovered yet; so
far, they only exist in sci-fi, "Star Trek"-type movies. But surely,
if time travel were somehow possible, many would jump at the chance to try
it out. Surprisingly, this opportunity is actually available-in the Japanese
martial art, Kendo. In a sense, Kendo students-who even look like warriors
from feudal Japan in their uniforms-get a taste of Samurai life without the
lethal element. Kendo, defined as "the way of the sword," is the
traditional martial art of fencing that is closely tied to Japanese sword-fighting.
At first sight, it seems like a violent practice with all the shouting and
hitting. However, it is quite the opposite, currently existing as an educative
sport whose participants strive to develop physical and mental control. With
their bamboo swords and sweeping movements, Kendo students produce a spectacle
of motion, grace, agility, and pure energy.
