Although a method of combat, Karate is guided by a high moral purpose, emphasizing self-discipline and a positive attitude. As Sensei Gichin Funakoshi once said,

"Just as it is the clear mirror that reflects without distortion, or the quiet valley that echoes a sound, so must one who would study Karate-do purge himself of selfish and evil thoughts, for only with a clear mind and conscience can he understand that which he receives."

Therefore, the essence of Karate training is both the development and balance of one's physical, but also mental (concentration, perseverance) and spiritual (peace, harmony) health.

There are five principles, created by Funakoshi, that sum up Karate practice well:

  • Seek Perfection of Character
  • Defend the Path of Truth
  • Strive to Excel
  • Be Courteous
  • Refrain from Violence
