@ Sports > Database > Jujitsu > Ranking

Jujitsu schools use one of two types of ranking systems. Under the traditional ranking system, Jujitsuka are awarded certificates called menkyo at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Instructors can also receive menkyo, and expert instructors receive certificates called menkyo kaiden. Other schools use the modern ranking system, which is adopted from Judo. Founder Jigoro Kano established the system so that individuals would be recognized for their dedication, commitment, and ability.

There are ten beginner levels (below Black Belt) called kyu, and each level has a certain colored belt with a stripe or multiple stripes.
