As
an ancient martial art used by the Samurai, the basic aim of Jujitsu is
to defeat an enemy or neutralize an enemy's aggression by whatever means
necessary. Students have the option of using severe techniques in the
event that combat is necessary, either to seriously injure the opponent
or to cause him to sense pain so that the conflict does not further develop.
However
the Samurai honor code is also rooted in Jujitsu's philosophy. With the
knowledge of lethal techniques, students also learn to use them carefully,
only to protect themselves and others from harm and to remove themselves
from a situation. Non-violence is heavily emphasized; students are taught
to seek ways for peace and cooperation so as to avoid unnecessary physical
confrontation.
Thus,
Jujitsu is also a practice of self-development since the student must
learn how to master himself in order to control how he utilizes his knowledge
in a situation and focus on the connection between mind and body. In doing
this, the good and strong inner qualities of a person will reflect in
their physical abilities.
