Jujitsu competition enables martial artists to test their fighting and
defensive skills in a realistic and safe environment. The two main systems
of competition are fighting system and duo system.
Fighting
System 
This involves contest between individuals-two males or two females categorized
by weight category. The competition takes place on 12 square meter mat
and consists of two 2 minute-long rounds. Contestants must wear protective
hand and shin pads, and for males, groin protection is mandatory. There
are three referees-one in the center, and two at the side. Contest begins
in the center of the mat area and contestants show their skills in three
areas:
- Striking
with the hands or feet
- Throwing
- Groundwork:
locks and strangulations

in Competition
They
are required to strike before throwing and throw before engaging in groundwork.
Duo
System 
This involves competition between two people, which are formed without
restriction to gender or weight category. Two pairs compete against each
other by demonstrating their techniques. In each pair, partners perform
pre-selected defenses and series of attacks. A total of twenty attacks
are performed, with twelve chosen by the center referee. Attacks fall
into four categories:
- Grabbing/grappling
- Embracing
and neck-locks
- Hand
and foot strikes
- Weapons
(knife and short staff)
Contestants are scored on their
- Ability
to control and execute powerful strikes
- Effectiveness
of locks and strangulations
- Speed
and realism of attacks and defenses
